Hälytyskellot

Event Introduction

Hälytyskellot (Alarm Bells, 2021) by sound artist Tytti Arola examines survival together with others, and being heard and touched. A group of people form a chain, joined by a string to which little bells are attached. Anyone can join in the performance of this work.

The strings and human chain symbolise helping: a person in trouble needs something to grab, and others can help him or her back to safety with the help of a string. In Hälytyskellot, the human touch is extended through the string, and the touch is perceived through movement and sound. One bell has only a soft sound, but when hundreds join together, the sound is magnified and loud. Hälytyskellot may also be interpreted as a tinkling appeal: listen to us!

At Musica nova Helsinki, Hälytyskellot will lead to the festival’s opening concert, Rituals, by the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra beginning in the Cathedral at 7 pm and the experience will continue during the concert. It will involve both professionals and amateurs, and an open invitation will be issued for volunteers. No previous experience is required – just a keen desire to engage in a piece of contemporary music.

Sign up by January 17th and join us!
