Tapiola Sinfonietta & Key Ensemble: Musica nova Helsinki

Event Introduction

Musica nova 2025 examines some of the fruits of human collaboration: communities, collectives, hierarchies, networks, trust, tensions, relations, interaction, dependencies. Weaving together interactive, trusting networks in sound at this Musica nova concert by the Tapiola Sinfonietta are not only the orchestra’s players but also the singers in the Key Ensemble and singer-conductor Jutta Seppänen.

The first half of the concert will be devoted to orchestral works that, in keeping with the festival theme, deal with modes of interaction not only between people but also between humans, the ecosystem and reality. The Tapiola Sinfonietta will premiere Tuning in to Ice, a wok in two parts by Jouni Hirvelä combining sounds of nature and instruments. After the interval, the concert will dive into the topic of community via various tensions, the collective subconscious and activism. The musical content of the Key Ensemble’s contribution is concentrated and speaks volumes, taking in screaming, microphone-amplified noise, and interaction with the audience. The works will cover such topics as the separation of Singapore from Malaysia in 1965, silent witnesses of mindless violence, the shared experience of physicality, and flocking.
