Tulkinnanvaraista: The Great Learning

Event Introduction

The Tulkinnanvaraista forum for avant-garde music presents the fifth paragraph of Cornelius Cardew’s (1936-81) The Great Learning (1968-70). This experimental music theatre embraces such things as mime, recitation, instrumental music, choreography, play, singing and improvisation. The libretto is the work of the same name by Confucius advocating self- and collective cultivation through sincerity, compassion and balance.

All are welcome to come along and experiment, discuss, rehearse and perform, regardless of background and skills. Participation is free. Also present will be the Naarmu Ensemble of music and performing arts enthusiasts, professionals from the UMUU Ensemble and acting students from the University of Tampere directed by musician-composer Juho Laitinen and dramaturge-director Pauliina Hulkko.

The event is a continuation of the full study performance of The Great Learning at the Tulkinnanvaraista forum in 2020–2024. Admission to this performance lasting about two hours is free, and all forms of participation are permitted. The café will be open throughout the session.
