Band of Weeds: The New Pangaea – a cross-species cantata

Image: Jyri Pitkänen

Event Introduction

The New Pangaea is a cross-species cantata based on the multi-layered interaction between humans and plants on the island of Seili. Plants arrived on the island long before humans, and the appreciation for different plant species has varied during the human presence. The work looks at 20 plants that represent the plants’ introduction to and disappearance from the island landscape.

In Helsinki, the work is performed at Hietsun Paviljonki, a seaside location that is perfect for the work.  Hietaniemi beach faces out towards the Helsinki archipelago, which is home to the same plant species as the island of Seili, with the exception of the field cow-wheat.

All the sound material in the concert was recorded on Seili using microphones and transformed from changes in the plants’ electrical conductivity to a form that is audible by human ears.
