Encounters Club: Meriheini Luoto & Kalle Vainio

Event Introduction

Minna Leinonen’s orchestral piece Vimma will be heard for the first time in HPO’s Musica nova Helsinki concert. The composer has used the melody from Kreeta Haapasalo, a Finnish folk singer and kantele player who lived in the 19th century, as its seed. At the Encounters club after the concert, Meriheini Luoto and Kalle Vainio explore surprising ways to approach the kantele and voice, e.g. using reel-to-reel recorders, modular synthesizers and robotics.

Meriheini Luoto: nyckelharpa, voice, electronics
Kalle Vainio: modular synthesizer, sampler, reel-to-reel recorder, robotic kantele

The Encounters Club is open to all and free of charge, and it takes place on Fridays around once a month in the main foyer of the Helsinki Music Centre.

The programme begins at 9pm after the evening’s concert, and the café is open until 10:30pm.
