Uusinta Ensemble: Pop Into Action

Event Introduction

The Uusinta Ensemble is putting on an active concert performance combining elements of popular music with the tendency of contemporary art music to test every imaginable border. At the heart is the premiere of a new work by Tara Valkonen in which humour, language and movement meet shades of light music with a twinkle in the eye. Framing this Uusinta Ensemble commission is a curated selection of fresh international new-music hits on the same themes.

The installation-like work by Thailander Piyawat Louilarpprasert draws on such things as steaming dry ice and the performers’ creative abandon, while American Julie Herndon makes direct contact with her audience by weaving the personal stories and speech intonation of the performers of her string quartet into her musical tapestry. The concert will culminate in a hyper-energetic work by Sara Glojnarič transforming the data of a million pop items into a stunning noisy groove.

All the works will be heard for the first time in Finland.
